The Standells en el Recuerdo Garagero

¿Alguna vez te pusiste a pensar en aquella canción llamada Dirty Water? ¿Sometimes Good Guys Don’t wear white? Si, The Standells con ustedes:
El grupo se forma en 1962 en la ciudad de Los Ángeles (EEUU) y los miembros eran Larry Tamblyn (vocalista y tecladista), Tony Valentino (guitarra líder), Gary Lane (bajista) y Gary Leeds (baterista), en ese entonces, la banda se llamaba Larry Tamblyn and The Standells.
Pero con el transcurrir de los años, Gary Leeds permanecería un breve tiempo en la banda y en su lugar entra el baterista y vocalista Dick Dodd y el grupo pasaría a llamarse The Standells.
En sus inicios, la banda es fuerte influenciada por el Beat Británico, y sus primeras presentaciones en la urbe Angelina les concedieron cierta popularidad local para llegar a grabar sus primeros temas en los sellos Linda, Liberty, MGM y Vee Jay, llegando a grabar los sencillos “You’ll be mine someday”, “Peppermint Beatles”, “I’ll go crazy”, “So Fine”, “Zebra in the kitchen”,”Don’t say goodbye” y “The boy next door”, estos sencillos fueron grabados entre los años 1964 y 1965.

Además, actuaron en la conocida serie llamada Los Munsters tocando canciones como “Do the Ringo” y un clásico de los melenudos de Liverpool llamado “I want to hold your hand”, y en la película llamada “Get yourself a college girl” en 1964, un film dirigido por Sydney Miller, en el que aparecían grupos como The Animals y The Dave Clark Five además de la solista brasilera de música bosanova Astrud Gilberto.

Durante 1966 conocen a Ed Cobb (ex miembro de The Four Preps) y se preocupó por su sonido y de firmar para la disquera “Tower Records” en donde sacaron el famoso single llamado “Dirty Water” (Escrito por Cobb, un excelente tema) el cual poseía un excelente lado B con “Rari” (también escrito por Cobb). Dicha canción llegaría al puesto número 11 del Billboard. Con anterioridad habían publicado el LP llamado “The Standells in Person at P.J,’s” en 1964. Su segundo LP sería el “Dirty Water” en 1966, un álbum con canciones como “Medication”, “There’s a store coming”, “Pride and devotion” o “Sometimes good guys don’t wear white” (que llegó al número 43), su segundo sencillo en la disquera Tower. También versionaban el clásico “Hey Joe” y el “19th nervous breakdown” de The Rolling Stones.

El sello que los acogió, Liberty, al ver el gran impacto que causó el sencillo “Dirty Water”, reedito el LP “The Standells in Person at P.J’S” pero bajo el nombre de “Live and out of sight” en 1966.
El tercer LP fue el conocido “Why pick on me?” editado en 1966, el cual tenía la canción escrita por Cobb que es la del mismo nombre del LP, seguido por los temas como “The girl and the moon” y otro clásico de los stones, el “Paint it Black”, además del gran “Little Red Book”.
La banda desaparecería de la escena rockera muy rápidamente, pero dejándonos un buen puñado de canciones con un buen fuzz y melodías increíblemente crudas.
